07/01/2024 – Bad Company
I am sure you have heard the wise old saying “Tell me who you walk with, and I will tell you who you are”, or perhaps you have heard “birds of a feather, flock together”. The basic idea behind these wise old maxims is that someone can formulate a basic understanding of another person’s personality, based on the friends or company the other person keeps. Another words these “sayings” imply that the company we keep will influence us in our habits or in our speech and even our relationship with God.
The word of God warns us of the perils of picking up bad habits because of the company we keep; consider the following verses:
1 Corinthians 15:33
Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.”
Proverbs 22:24-25
Make no friendship with a man given to anger, nor go with a wrathful man, lest you learn his ways and entangle yourself in a snare.
Getting involved with the wrong crowd or keeping bad company is a by-product of doubting and drifting in our faith. We are especially vulnerable to this trap when we are not firm on the rock of Christ. There will always be an abundance of those that will encourage us to compromise our walk with Christ. Just to be clear, those are not your friends!
Meditate on this verse today: Proverbs 12:26 “The righteous choose their friends carefully, but the way of the wicked leads them astray.”
