02/11/2025 – The Work of God is Believing in Jesus
Scripture: John 6: 27 Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.” 28 Then they said to Him, “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.”
Reflection: The questions people asked our Lord Jesus were often silly and at times ill-intentioned. But this is one of the best questions people presented to Him, and Christ took the opportunity to reveal one of the most important truths for our lives.
Most people at that time were convinced that the works God required had to do with the rituals of religion. They believed that keeping of the ceremonial laws given through Moses would earn them favor with God. Many people still believe that today. But the Bible reveals, and nature confirms, that our works can only achieve perishable benefits. Everything that we achieve is temporary, and eventually comes to an end.
Our Lord Jesus revealed that only He can provide the blessings that lead to eternal life, and we cannot earn these blessings through the works of our flesh. He will provide them to all who believe in Him. Believing in our Lord Jesus is the primary work we must do once we are saved by grace. This faith will produce the works that please God and bless others.
