05/28/2024 – Turn your mourning into action

Eddy De La Hoz   -

2 Samuel 19: 24 Now Mephibosheth the son of Saul came down to meet the king. And he had not cared for his feet, nor trimmed his mustache, nor washed his clothes, from the day the king departed until the day he returned in peace. 25 So it was, when he had come to Jerusalem to meet the king, that the king said to him, “Why did you not go with me, Mephibosheth?”

The second person to welcome David back is Mephibosheth. He was also from the house of Saul, a son of Jonathan. He represents our inability, despite our desire- the weakness of the flesh despite the willingness of our spirit. This man desired the return of David. This was evident in his long period of mourning.

But David asks: why didn’t you go with me? The reason may seem evident; but the point is that to serve God you have to overcome your weakness. Our mourning for the sin of the world is not going to accomplish the purpose of God- it is our action. What a blessing would have been for David to have someone from the house of Saul support him when he was down. He was there now…he was able to travel after all.

David took away half of what he had given Mephibosheth. He only received half a reward. Those who plant half-heartedly will receive a half-hearted harvest. But those who overcome the weakness of the flesh will receive a full reward.
