03/02/2022 – The prostate

James Vazquez   -

A few years ago, a typical morning at the office, a colleague had returned to work after recovering from surgery. He was treated for prostate cancer. We all surrounded him celebrating his return, exchanged hugs, joked, and laughed; it was great to have him back at the office once again. After the fanfare faded, the crowd started to thin out, soon it was just him and me. I continued to poked fun at him, he laughed, he smiled, then I asked him with a serious tone “did it hurt? Are you in pain now?” It seemed my inquiring questions chased his smile away, he changed his tone to match mine and replied “yes, it did hurt at first but now I’m just a bit sore”. He shared with me something the doctors had told him post his surgery, the doctors told him “Welcome to your new normal!”, meaning things would not be the same for him going forward.

The prostate is a small gland (the size of a walnut) that can cause much havoc on our health when it’s not functioning properly. Nevertheless, regardless of it size it serves a vital function in the male’s reproductive system. Amazing to me is that how can something so small, something unseen could affect a person’s wellbeing.

1 Corinthians 12:22 and 27

22 In fact, it is just the opposite. The parts of the body that seem to be weaker are the ones we can’t do without.

27 You are the body of Christ. Each one of you is a part of it.

Truth be told, the prostate is position in the most unflattering location in the body’s anatomy, yet when it’s functioning properly, it goes on doing its work un-noticed, serving its function behind the scenes, no compliments and never seeming the light of day.

Perhaps in your service to God has you also positioned in an unflattering location just like the prostate. Your service is behind the scenes, un-noticed and with no compliments. Perhaps you said in some fashion:

  • …Since I am not a hand, I am not part of the body. 1 Corinthian 12:15
  • …Since I am not an eye, I am not part of the body. 1 Corinthian 12:16

But I encourage you today in whatever capacity you are serving God in, stay at your position and serve faithfully from your station. You might be a prostate in the body of Christ, but remember the prostate is part of the reproductive system.

Today meditate on this scripture: 1 Corinthian 12:26If one part suffers, every part suffers with it. If one part is honored, every part shares in its joy.
