03/01/2022 – The giant of apathy
This giant is perhaps one of the deadliest, God will fight and help us conquer the giant of fear (See The giant of fear devotional) but we must face and fight the giant of apathy. This is because the giant of apathy draws its power from our very own lack of disposition in the service of God. To put it bluntly, the greater the lack of disposition in God’s service means a bigger the giant of apathy.
The dictionaries define Apathy as: “lack of interest, enthusiasm, or concern. It is the state of being indifferent to something that should otherwise arouse, provoke, or motivate you. Or a lack of responsiveness to something that might normally excite interest or emotion.”
Haggai 1:2
This is what the Lord Almighty says: “These people say, ‘The time has not yet come to rebuild the Lord’s house.’”
King Cyrus allowed the Jews to return and rebuild the temple in Jerusalem, but after a strong enthusiastic start, the rebuilding of the temple came to a complete stop. The giant of apathy held the Jews captive with a lack of interest for sixteen years. Moreover, the Lord admonished the people in verses 3-4, “3Then the word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai: 4 “Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin?” The Lord gives the Jews a reality-check all the way through verse 11 of Haggai chapter 1. In essence the people’s apathy towards service to God, translated in a diminished blessing from God.
Ultimately, we are the ones that feed the giant of apathy, so ultimately, we are the ones that must face and kill this giant. Returning to our first love and not becoming weary of our service to God.
Today meditate on this scripture, “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” Galatian 6:9
